(ANSA) - NEW YORK, SEPTEMBER 18 - Anthony Fauci is ready to bet on an effective vaccine for November or December, however, he leaves the possibility open also for October.
Speaking at a virtual panel discussion at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, the American immunologist said that ultimately the odds depend on the number of infections that occur during the trial.
"To tell if a vaccine is effective - he said - researchers need to detect 150 infections in the testing area, at the moment the trial is two thirds of the total number of people to whom doses are intended". Fauci does not rule out that the results may come sooner. He further explained that researchers experiment with vaccines by administering doses to some people and placebos for others and then wait to see those who have been given a real dose develop fewer cases and less severe symptoms.
