In Krefeld, a 53-year-old is said to have mistreated his wife for hours.
The police arrested the man on Sunday on the outskirts.
He was there on foot, said a police spokesman.
On Saturday evening, the emergency services initially feared that the man could do something to their four children after the mistreatment of his wife.
Special armed forces arrived on Saturday evening and surrounded the family's home.
It was only after many hours that the all-clear came: the children were doing well.
They had been alone in the apartment.
Her 32-year-old mother was found seriously injured in the trunk of a car on Saturday afternoon - not far from downtown Krefeld.
At the hospital, the woman told officers about the four children.
"As a precautionary measure, the police called for a special task force," according to a police report.
SEC forces drove to the address and posted themselves around the house.
"Around 8 p.m. the police were able to speak to the children through a window. When they announced that the father was not at home, the fire brigade and police took the children out of the apartment," the report said.
"The children are doing well under the circumstances," said a police spokesman.
The mother will continue to be hospitalized for her injuries, but will probably be able to leave the clinic in the next few days.
