YouTube will use artificial intelligence (AI) to find videos that are not suitable for minors and automatically apply the related restrictions, thus respecting the regulatory obligations in force in the various countries.
This was announced by the Google platform adding that in Europe, in compliance with the new directives, it will be able to ask some users to verify their age through a document.
YouTube will apply machine learning to the sea magnum of user-uploaded videos.
Those not suitable to be seen by minors under 18 according to the rules adopted by the platform - movies that contain nudity or sex scenes, but also vulgar language, violence or depiction of dangerous activities - the restrictions will automatically apply.
The user who wants to watch them must log in with their account, which must be at least 18 years old, otherwise they will be redirected to more suitable content.
The restrictions also apply to "viewers who attempt to watch age-restricted videos on most third-party websites" - they will be redirected to YouTube, where they will need to log in.
In addition, in Europe, YouTube will introduce a new age verification step in the coming months, in line with the latest directives including the one on audiovisual media services (AVMS).
"As part of this process, some European users may need to provide additional proof of age when they try to watch inappropriate content for minors," YouTube explains. If our systems cannot determine that a user has at least 18 years old, he / she must provide a valid identity document or a credit card for age verification ".
