We actually wanted to go on vacation to Austria this Corona summer, with the children and the dog, to Schruns in the Montafon.
In March we went skiing in Tyrol, but left early because of the pandemic.
We wanted to give Austria another chance in July, the number of infections was low.
The plan was: We live in the apartment and hike into the mountains.
We were looking forward to hut tours with Elmo and trips to the lake, holidays with dogs are always wonderful.
Then it turned out differently.
Almost three weeks before the planned vacation, I was in Mallorca for SPIEGEL to research the situation on the Germans' favorite island at the beginning of the summer vacation.
I lived with my colleagues in S'Arenal, in the middle of the party mile on Ballermann, and it was a special experience: Most of the hotels were closed, the discos and bars as well, there were hardly any people on the beach, it was wonderfully quiet wherever otherwise it is difficult to understand your own word.
The sun was shining, blue sky, clean sea.
Every morning I checked the long-term weather report.
He forecast 32 degrees for the next few weeks.
For Schruns he predicted thunderstorms and later 15 degrees with drizzle.
I phoned my wife.
Then we canceled Austria, which was still free of charge.
Instead, we booked flights to Palma and a holiday apartment in the northeast of Mallorca.
