The Russian space agency plans to shoot a feature film in space in 2021. Nothing is known about the plot yet - only that the cosmonaut's profession is to be "heroized".

A film is to be shot on the International Space Station ISS in autumn 2021.

This was announced by the Russian space agency Roskosmos in Moscow.

The purpose of the project is therefore to "heroize" the profession of cosmonaut and to make space travel more popular in Russia.

The film is produced by Dimitri Rogosin, the head of the agency, and the state television broadcaster Perwy Kanal, among others.

Roskosmos did not provide any information on the plot of the feature film and the cast.

There should be an official tender, it said.

A great challenge awaits the actors who will then travel to the ISS in a Soyuz capsule.

Space travelers usually need months of training to work on the space station around 400 kilometers above the earth.

Numerous cosmonauts told Russian media on Thursday that they had no concerns about sending actors to the ISS.

Space tourists have already been to space, and actors could do that, too, said spaceman Sergei Ryazansky to the Internet portal "gazeta.ru".

Ryazansky was on the ISS in 2017.

A similar project is being planned in the USA.

As reported by several US media, the actor Tom Cruise is to travel to the ISS to work on a film to be directed by Doug Liman ("The Bourne Identity", "Edge of Tomorrow").

Jim Bridenstine, the head of the US agency Nasa, confirmed the plans on Twitter in early May.

"We need popular media to inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists to realize Nasa's ambitious plans," wrote the politician.

The entrepreneur Elon Musk and his company SpaceX are also said to be involved in the project.

“That should be a lot of fun!” The entrepreneur replied to Bridenstine's tweet.
