Five Berlin elephants have arrived safely at Leipzig Zoo.

The move of the pachyderms from the zoo in the capital had taken several days.

The newcomers made a relaxed impression and apparently felt comfortable, said Leipzig Zoo Director Jörg Junhold on Friday.

From Saturday, visitors could see the five elephants in the zoo.

The elephant cow Kewa (37 years), her children Thuza (12), Pantha (8) and Edgar (4) and companion Astra (40) are to stay in Leipzig permanently.

With the Asian elephants an offspring of the critically endangered animals should be secured.

There was already first trunk contact with the Leipzig animals.

The bull Voi Nam, as well as Rani, Kiran and Don Chung already live in the zoo.
