Meeting at an annual congress in Deauville, cinema operators were reassured by a support plan from the Ministry of Culture and the Ba

At the entrance to the Deauville International Center (CID), where the traditional Film Publishers 'Day took place this Thursday - distributors present their trailers for the coming year as part of the Exhibitors' Congress -, a giant poster of the next James Bond, "Dying can wait", is talking a lot.

A black sticker hides what appears to be the release date.

Recent rumors point to a possible new shift of the film, first scheduled for April, then shifted by Universal to November 11 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a difficult context for venue bosses, even though some imagine this poster was slated for release in April and the sticker obscures the original date, a few wonder, as November's 007 is likely to fill cinemas.

Especially since the day before, in the middle of the annual convention, another American studio, Disney, announced the postponement to 2021 of several of its global releases planned in the coming months, such as "Black Widow" (a Marvel film with Scarlett Johansson) or Steven Spielberg's “West Side Story”.

But the doubts will be raised by the French representatives of several American distributors who insisted on making the trip to Deauville with their trailers.

Starting with Universal, which ensures that the James Bond, if the sanitary measures in force in theaters are maintained as is, will be released on November 11.

The studio came to present other upcoming blockbusters: "Trolls 2", October 14, "The Croods 2", December 2, "Respect", on the life of Aretha Franklin, in January 2021.

Warner presented December's hunk of the month, "Wonder Woman 1984" (released 30th);

Paramount, "Without a noise 2" for April 21 and especially "Maverick", the sequel to "Top Gun" with Tom Cruise, for July 14;

Metropolitan Films, "The Good Criminal", starring Liam Neeson, for October 14th or "An Angry Man" with Jason Statham for January 20.

Enough to bring back a smile to the operators, who were reassured, the day before, by the announcements of the Minister of Culture, Roselyne Bachelot, visiting the congress.

A plan which provides for 34 million euros in direct aid to theaters and 60 million allocated to the National Cinema Center (CNC) to compensate for the lack of revenue during and after confinement.

"It's really good," says a manager of the Hauts-de-Seine municipal cinema.

Now, it must fall very quickly ... "The general delegate of the National Federation of French Cinemas (FNCF), Marc-Olivier Sebbag, is on the same line:" We had a real feeling of relief, while being aware of the real effort that this represents for the State.

The announced plan is very strong, it will allow operators to hold out over the long term.

In a context where there is a revenue deficit of 60%, this aid must be paid very quickly, to which the CNC is committed ... "

In this tense health and economic period, the cinema owners present in Deauville, and all masked in the CID, however had other reasons to rejoice during this day.

French film distributors had reserved good news for them through their trailers, sometimes accompanied by surprises.

The most beautiful came from Studiocanal, the only distributor to have made the trip this year with a film crew.

That of "Bac Nord" (released on December 23) by Cédric Jimenez, with Gilles Lellouche, François Civil, Karim Leklou, a punchy film about a Bac team in the northern districts of Marseille.

All were present on stage, and Gilles Lellouche made a splash on the tone of black humor: “We spoke with Disney, and then we said to ourselves that we were going to go out in 2020!

"

"Les Tuche 4" announced for December 9

He's not the only one to have fed the applause machine.

Gaumont packed the audience with his trailers of “Aline” by Valérie Lemercier, inspired by the life of Celine Dion (released November 18), three hilarious teasers of “OSS 117, black Africa alert” (February 3) and laughing images of "Sens de la famille" with Franck Dubosc and Alexandra Lamy (January 20).

Same success for Pathé, which came with a Christmas song - where the log is replaced by fries - of “Tuche 4”, announced for December 9, and a very promising trailer for “Eiffel” (February 17), on the construction of the Tower, with Romain Duris.

UGC was not to be outdone, with images of “Deux Alfred” (January 13) by Bruno Podalydès with his brother Denis, or of “Imaginary Medicine” (April 14), a comedy that seems to play the shift in a very funny way.

Over the course of the day, other BAs were very successful: the first images of Alexandre Astier's “Kaamelott” shown by SND (November 25), Maïwenn's “DNA” (October 28) or “Les Méchants” ( February 10) by Mouloud Achour and Dominique Baumard, with an astounding cast, at Le Pacte, “Un triomphe” (December 23) with Kad Merad at Memento. Without forgetting “Mon Grand-père et moi” (October 7) with Robert De Niro at Alba Films, “Des Hommes” (November 11) by Lucas Belvaux with Gérard Depardieu, Catherine Frot and Jean-Pierre Darroussin or “Eugénie Grandet” by Marc Dugain after Balzac (March 17) at Ad Vitam… And many others. The bad months, without movies or recipes, confinement or summer seemed a long way off on this day of rich announcements. It remains to be hoped that all these release dates will be maintained ...
