Toothpaste should not be missing in any bathroom.
The Stiftung Warentest tested 21 creams - eight received the grade unsatisfactory.
Natural products in particular performed poorly.
Stiftung Warentest
tested 21
toothpastes
for their effectiveness and other criteria.
Eight
products
received the
grade “poor”
.
Most
natural products
performed
particularly poorly
in the
test
.
Berlin - According to a study from 2017, every German buys five tubes of toothpaste per year.
In addition to the feeling of freshness that regular
brushing
gives us
, the (hopefully) daily ritual in the morning and evening naturally also has an important health aspect.
It protects the teeth from tooth decay
- at least that's what you'd think.
The use of the correct and suitable
toothpaste is also
important
for optimal protection
.
Stiftung Warentest has now tested 21 universal products for their effectiveness and other factors - including nine
natural products
.
The result: eight pastes failed the consumer organization's test for the most important criterion that a toothpaste must meet.
They do not contain the
fluoride
that is urgently needed for dental prophylaxis
.

21 toothpastes put to the test: These products are the best protection for teeth against tooth decay
First of all, the positive news: Seven of the 21 products tested received
top marks
from Stiftung Warentest
.
The result also shows that you
don't even have to
dig
deep into your pocket
for proper
mouthguard
.
Many very well-rated products are already available for less than 50 cents per 100 milliliters.
These include the toothpastes from the two Aldi companies.
Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd's own brands are already available for 0.34 euros or 0.35 euros per 100 milliliters in discount stores.
Toothpaste rated VERY GOOD: Stiftung Warentest gave seven products a top rating

Of the 21 toothpastes tested,
Stiftung Warentest
rated
the
Dental Delight
product
the best.
According to the consumer organization, the toothpaste even competes with whitening pastes, as it removes discoloration very well.
The
product also received the
top grade of 1.0
for
caries prophylaxis
.
Toothpaste with satisfactory to good results: Stiftung Warentest gives six products a solid rating
brand | product | grade |
---|---|---|
dm | Dontodent Clear Fresh | GOOD (1.6) |
Blend-a-med | All-round protection extra fresh and clean | GOOD (1.6) |
signal | Sport Gel Fresh | GOOD (1.6) |
Lavera | Toothpaste Complete Care | GOOD (1.7) |
signal | Caries protection 3 in 1 | GOOD (1.7) |
Marvis | Ginger Mint | SATISFACTORY (3.5) |

A frightening result, on the other hand, is that of the 21 products tested, eight were punished with the grade “poor” - even before they even made it into the test phase.
Stiftung Warentest determined
that the basic criterion for a good toothpaste was that it contained
fluoride
.
Because: The ingredient is important in order to be able to prevent tooth decay at all - it strengthens the tooth enamel and makes it resistant to acids.
If the toothpaste contained too little or no fluoride, the product was therefore automatically excluded from the test and received a
rating of 5
.
Products without fluoride were automatically rated "poor" by Stiftung Warentest
brand | product | grade |
---|---|---|
Droste-Laux | Toothpaste with three kings gifts | DEFECTIVE (5.0) |
Himalayas | Ayurvedic toothpaste | DEFECTIVE (5.0) |
Dr. Hauschka | Mint toothpaste forte | DEFECTIVE (5.0) |
Eco cosmetics | Toothpaste with black cumin | DEFECTIVE (5.0) |
Himalayas | Neem & pomegranate | DEFECTIVE (5.0) |
Lavera | Complete Care fluoride free | DEFECTIVE (5.0) |
Logodent | Extra fresh peppermint toothpaste | DEFECTIVE (5.0) |

It is also worrying that the
toothpastes
assessed as deficient by Stiftung Warentest are
often
natural products
with which people actually want to do something good for themselves and also like to invest a lot of money.
For the most expensive natural toothpaste, Himalaya - Ayurvedic toothpaste - consumers have to pay around 22 euros per 100 milliliters.
In such
natural cosmetics
, mainly pure vegetable raw materials are used, but their effectiveness in protecting against
tooth decay
has not been adequately proven, as Stiftung Warentest reports.
A test by the consumer magazine Ökotest recently warned that natural products often
do not contain the
fluoride
that is
urgently needed to combat tooth decay
.
Positive: A
natural product rated very well
was also included in the test
: Logodent's toothpaste received a top rating.
