(ANSA-AFP) - MOSCOW, SEPTEMBER 27 - Russia has appealed to Armenia and Azerbaijan for an "immediate cease-fire".
"We appeal to the parties to immediately cease the fire and enter into negotiations to stabilize the situation," reads a note from the Moscow Foreign Ministry.
The statement states that "intense bombings have occurred along the line of contact" between the two former Soviet republics in the autonomous region of Nagorno Karabakh.
In its own right, Turkey "strongly condemns the Armenian attack on Azerbaijan, which caused civilian casualties", calling it a "clear violation of international laws", and "reaffirms its full support" in Baku: the Turkish news agency Anadolu writes on Twitter, citing the Ankara Foreign Ministry.
The Anadolu also quotes the Azerbaijani president, Ilham Aliyev, according to whom "Azerbaijan defends its land" because "Karabakh belongs to it", promises to "avenge the blood of the martyrs" and claims to have destroyed Armenian "military means" without but to name the two helicopters that the Armenians claim to have shot down.
