(ANSA) - RYAD, 28 SEPTEMBER - Due to the pandemic, the next summit of the G20 scheduled for November will be held virtually, envideoconference, in Saudi Arabia.
This was announced today by Riyadh.
Since March, all G20 meetings have been virtual.
"The G20 2020 Leaders Summit will be held virtually from November 21 to 22 and will be chaired by His Majesty ReSalman bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud," the kingdom said in a statement.
The summit "will focus on protecting life and restoring growth" bearing in mind that the objective was to address "the vulnerabilities discovered during the pandemic and lay the foundations for a better future".
Ahead of the summit, Saudi Arabia is trying to improve its image, clouded by accusations of violation of human rights.
Human rights groups have urged G20 states to put pressure on Riyadh as a rise in repression against activists and residents in the kingdom is registered.
The assassination of Jamal Khashoggi on October 2, 2018, in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, tarnished the reputation of the kingdom and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, accused by Turkey and human rights defenders of being behind the murder of this journalist who was close to the regime. diRiyadh before becoming a critic.
