A nurse was attacked by a gorilla at the Madrid Zoo.

Apparently one of the security doors was open, as the zoo announced.

The experienced employee is being treated in the hospital, her health is serious.

Accordingly, the 46-year-old was in the monkey enclosure on Sunday morning to clean it and feed the animals.

Suddenly she was attacked by the 29-year-old male gorilla "Malabo".

The monkey reportedly broke both arms of the woman, she suffered a head trauma and injuries to the torso.

Stunned by arrow

The zoo team intervened and immobilized the silverback, which weighs around 200 kilograms, with an anesthetic dart.

"Malabo" has been raised by caregivers since he was born and is said to normally have a "close" relationship with his caretakers.

As to the cause of the incident, the zoo announced that security doors had been left open and that everything indicated a "human error".

An internal investigation has been initiated.

According to their own statements, the police are also investigating the background to the attack.
