PARIS - France pays homage in three dimensions to Luigi Serafini's 'Codex Seraphinianus'.

Starting from 10 October, the Sètè Regional Center of Contemporary Art - a wonderful port in the south of France with deep ties to Italy - offers an immersion in the surrealist universe of the Roman artist, architect and designer, prolific creator of this world bestseller, the Codex precisely, 'book of books', a hybrid encyclopedia of an invented world where encrypted texts and illustrations of imaginary creatures and plants.

Until January 3, 2021, the artist will transform the Center régional d'art contemporain (Crac) Occitania in scale 1 through drawings, sculptures, paintings, furniture and texts, as many sources of inexhaustible inspiration.

The first room of the itinerary entitled 'Sur terre et sur mer avec le Codex Seraphinianus' brings together various marine figures, tuna, carp or mermaid.

At the center of an esoteric-looking altar stands a halved tuna, a recurring animal in the Serafinian bestiary, which has the particularity of splitting in two when it crosses the Strait of Gibraltar and is reconstituted later in the spring in order to reproduce. dedicated to the Codex and presents numerous tables of the book.

The third and last room dedicated to the terrestrial world is organized around a carrot-woman sculpture in painted resin, at the same time virtuous realism and strange farce: lying on a bed of earth and vegetables, like a goddess from beyond the grave, the woman -carot refers to the figure of Persephone / Proserpina of the Greek-Latin mythology.

The Codex Seraphinianus brings into play the wise order and the freest imagination, it unites beyond borders.

Its encrypted alphabet proposes another form of knowledge through an infinity of visual puns.

Serafini evokes in this regard the language of the troubadour whose stories were transmitted through gestures and words even before they existed as writing.

The artist dialogues with the underground and submarine memory of Sète, which reminds him of Gaeta, his Italian cousin - here was born, among others, from an Italian mother, the genius of the song Georges Brassens and you eat the tiella just like in Gaeta - , but also the streets of Rome or certain regions of Italy crossed, as in Sète, by the lingua d'Oc.

Regarding the Codex Serafini writes: "It was a writing that contained the dream of many other writings".
