With the killing of seven lions, rangers in South Africa stopped a pack of predators from breaking out of a national park.
The national park authority Sanparks had previously been alerted by a farmer.
He had discovered around a dozen mangled sheep on the grounds of his property, said spokesman Rey Thakhuli of the dpa news agency.
The incident is said to have occurred on Tuesday.
The rangers would then have discovered that three animals of a seven-headed pride of lions were responsible.
The lions were then successfully chased back to the Karoo National Park in the west of the country.
A few hours later, however, they broke out again and returned to the farm, reported the news portal News 24.
The rangers then went out again and finally killed the pack to rule out any danger to the people of the region.
A helicopter was also used, according to Thakhuli.
South Africa is known worldwide for its nature reserves and wild animals.
However, there and in many other African countries a number of animal species are threatened by poaching and habitat loss, among other things.
The population of lions in Africa has shrunk by half in the past 20 years, as the Conservation Union (IUCN) points out.
