US researchers have dealt intensively with the diet trend of intermittent fasting - and come to rather disappointing results in one study.

  • Intermittent fasting * as a healthy way to shed pounds: The form of fasting is touted in a similar way by many doctors and nutrition experts.

  • But there are facts that speak against intermittent fasting: Researchers from California found that intermittent fasting can also have negative effects.

  • The study made it clear:

Intermittent fasting only sheds pounds if those who want to lose weight do not neglect an important detail

    .

Intermittent fasting (also called intermittent fasting) should make you slim, have a positive effect on the metabolism and even have a life-prolonging effect.

The German Nutrition Society writes: “Evening fasting should relieve the insulin level, promote weight loss and improve sleep quality.

In addition, it should reduce aging processes and thus have a life-prolonging effect

”.

In animal experiments, alternating intermittent fasting had shown a life-prolonging effect - the principle of this form of fasting is based on only consuming around 25 percent of the usual amount of energy on fasting days.

On the other hand, on the non-fasting days, you can eat as much as you want.

Probably the best-known form of intermittent

fasting

is 16: 8 intermittent

fasting

:

16 hours no food is consumed here, the fasting person can eat whatever they want for the remaining eight hours of the day

.

Doctors and nutritionists from California have now thoroughly researched this form of diet.

Dylan Lowe's team from the University of California in San Francisco published the study results in the journal Jama Internal Medicine.

Intermittent fasting did not have beneficial effects on blood lipids and blood sugar

One finding of the researchers: Obese study participants did not lose much more weight through intermittent fasting than the group that ate three main meals in the morning, at noon and in the evening.

116 volunteers took part in the three-month study.

The intermittent fasting group was only allowed to eat between noon and eight in the evening and had to remain abstinent for the rest of the day.

The Süddeutsche Zeitung reported that no specifications were made regarding the amount of calories or the amount of exercise.

At the end of the study, the participants were weighed, with the result that the intermittent fasting group lost an average of 1.17 percent weight, the other group 0.75 percent.

One reason for the small difference could be that the test subjects were allowed to eat everything - including high-calorie dishes such as fast food or sweets.

The US researchers also noticed that after the study period, intermittent fasting had not had a positive effect on blood lipids, blood sugar and other metabolic parameters.

But negative effects could also be observed:

Around two thirds of the average weight loss of 1.7 kilograms was due to a loss of lean body mass,

as reported by the SZ.

"Reduced lean body mass can be associated with weakness, illness and a loss of quality of life," warn the authors: "Caution is required here, as this can lead to muscle wasting or worsen it." The yo-yo effect is also more likely to occur when a diet causes a lot of lean body mass to disappear, de researchers say.
