BRUSSELS - The European Commission has approved the application for registration of the name "Olio Lucano" in the Register of Protected Geographical Indications (Igp).
This is the 307th designation of a food product to obtain recognition and protection from the European Union.
Lucan oil is added to more than 1,490 already protected food products, to which are added more than 1,620 wines, more than 240 spirits and 5 flavored wines.
The list is available in the eAmbrosia database.
Basilicata Region, a recognition for many producers and oil millers
"From today the Lucan oil officially registered in the register of protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications": this was announced by the councilor for agricultural and forestry policies of the Basilicata Region, Francesco Fanelli , explaining that the registration is certified by the Official Journal of the European Community today.
"This is a recognition that gives merit to the work and sacrifices of the many producers and oil millers who for years have believed and invested with energy to complete this quality path. With the Igp Olio Lucano the products in brand of excellence of Basilicata with five DOP, seven Igp, four DOC, one DOCG and one IGT. A further success that strengthens and enhances the identity of Lucanian agriculture - concluded Fanelli, in a note released by the press office of Basilicata regional council - which translates into the firmness and passion of its protagonists ".
Bellanova, is recognition in Basilicata
"Finally Lucan oil also obtains the IGP certification from the European Union. An absolutely deserved recognition for this high quality product and for the more than 12 thousand Lucan olive growers who produce it".
Thus the Minister of Agricultural Policies Teresa Bellanova comments on the definitive go-ahead for the registration of the IGP "Olio Lucano IGP" in the European register of protected designations of origin and geographical indications (Dop and Igp) and of traditional specialties guaranteed (Stg) against imitations and fakes.
"A journey that began in 2016 and built over time with Luca Braia, former Councilor for Agriculture, in Basilicata, and has now come to fruition", underlined Teresa Bellanova.
"We can only be satisfied with the increasing number of our products officially recognized, with a dedicated brand, as great agri-food excellence, good not only for the palate, but also for health".
With the Igp Olio Lucano, Basilicata's premium brand products officially rise to eighteen with five DOP, seven Igp, four Doc, one DOCG and one Igt.
