(ANSA) - ROME, OCTOBER 06 - The number of people affected by seasonal flooding in East Africa has increased six times over the past five years, according to data provided to the BBC by the UN, with nearly six million people affected this year such as 1.5 million displaced persons.

Parts of the region are experiencing the most torrential rains of the century.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has collected the data outlining the extent of the emergency.

In 2016, more than one million people were affected by floods, with homes and businesses damaged or forced to seek refuge after their homes were destroyed.

In 2019 that figure jumped to four million.

The rains, which are expected to peak in November and affect most East African countries, are expected to bring further misery to millions of displaced people.

In fact, almost all states of Sudan have experienced record floods since July, and the same happens in parts of Ethiopia and South Sudan.

Scientists believe that the warming of the Indian Ocean is causing the increase in precipitation.

A recent study from the University of Texas speculates that the volume of rainfall could double by the end of this century.
