Up to a third of all corona virus recoverers suffer from long-term damage and persistent symptoms, even months after recovering from the corona.

This emerges from a special report by the IDF Intelligence Division published today (Tuesday).

From Benjamin Netanyahu's Twitter account

The report also reviewed studies conducted on persistent complications reported after recovery, a phenomenon known as "Long Covid". Many, with some not benefiting over time.

Patients reported persistent and severe fatigue, headaches, sleep disturbances, difficulty concentrating and remembering, problems with daily functioning and persistent impairment of the sense of taste and smell.

These symptoms have been reported in some of the studies with a high rate of up to 80% of recovering patients.

Some studies have also reported late but rare damage to the peripheral nervous system.

According to other studies, up to half of patients suffer from damage to the cardiovascular system (cardiovascular) of varying severity.

Among the problems - inflammation of the heart muscle and arrhythmias.

These symptoms have also been reported in Corona recoverers who did not require hospitalization, and their long-term significance has not yet been elucidated.

Some recoverers suffer from persistent difficulty breathing and coughing, some for months, and a decrease in physical fitness and endurance.

Some recoverers were diagnosed with fibrosis of the lung tissue, but the long-term significance of the phenomenon was not clear.

Other symptoms reported recovering are depression and anxiety, hair loss, rash, hearing loss and tinnitus, abdominal pain and persistent diarrhea, muscle and joint pain and even an increased risk of developing diabetes.

"Beyond the consequences of these complications and damage to individuals who have recovered from the disease - in light of the widespread morbidity in the country, these ongoing complications may have significant implications for public health and even heavy economic consequences for the economy," write the intelligence and national information center in Corona.

The researchers noted that for this reason it is necessary to curb morbidity in all age groups, even when it comes to young and healthy people.

"It is advisable to promote public information on the subject in which emphasis is placed on the message that corona disease can cause long-term disabilities even among young and healthy people, and therefore everyone should protect themselves from contracting the virus."

They further noted that there is a need to open “recovery clinics” for the follow-up of recovering Corona patients, rehabilitation clinics, psychological follow-up and raising awareness among all medical staff for the possibility of long-term damage among Corona recoverers.
