It all started with a simple, short-lived Facebook post and ended up mobilizing a crowd.
The announcement from the restaurant
La Taberna de Fabry
, in Wilde, was an encouraging call for more than 1,500 people in the midst of the economic crisis due to the coronavirus pandemic.
At least that is the number of applicants that Fabricio, the owner of the premises, interviewed between Monday and Tuesday to fill the 15 positions available among chefs and kitchen assistants, bacheros, waiters and waitresses.
The premises, located in Ramón Franco at 6100 (near the corner of Las Flores) in that Buenos Aires town, will open its doors next Monday the 12th. The masons are still working inside.
Meanwhile,
a crowd surrounded the block waiting to submit their resume
.
In dialogue with
Todo Noticias
, the business owner said that there were people of all ages and from different parts of Capital and Del Conurbano.
"People have come from Longchamps, people who have traveled two hours. A kid came by bike who had an hour and a half to get there."
The Facebook notice.
The funny thing is that
the ad promised interviews between Monday and Wednesday
, from 6 to 10 p.m. But such a demand implied a change of plans: "At 11 o'clock people began to come, that's why we decided to advance it and as soon as we vacated at 3 or 4 p.m. we started to interview. We were there until 1 in the morning and there were still 200 people left. We asked them to leave us their resumes because we couldn't interview them all. "
That was the scenario for the first two days, but this Wednesday the picture did not change.
Dozens of people, with social distancing and chinstraps, waited for the opportunity to apply
for vacant positions.
There were young people fresh out of high school as people scraping retirement.
The crisis, like the pandemic, does not understand ages.
The Tavern will open in the next few days.
One of the women in line (19 years old) said that she had already come the first two days but had no luck.
"The first day I came at 3:30 p.m. and there was a band of people, I went around the block. Yesterday I came at 3:00 p.m. and I couldn't either. Luckily I could come early today," he told
TN
.
Fabricio was surprised by such a summons.
"It is ugly to see big people, people of 60 years old. One tries to give help to those who need it most. The experience is done by working," he says.
The scene in Wilde is a clipping of joblessness and financial woes amid the pandemic.
The Indec confirmed that the unemployment rate rose to 13.1% in the second quarter of 2020, the worst figure in 16 years.
In total, there are 2.5 million fewer workers and unemployment affects 2.3 million people.
