In northwestern Pakistan, a two and a half year old girl was apparently sexually assaulted and then killed.

The Pakistani daily newspaper "Dawn" reports on the case.

Several suspects have already been arrested, said police in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.

The toddler from Charsadda town disappeared on Tuesday and was found the next day.

According to investigators, an autopsy report revealed that she had been raped and killed with knife wounds.

The police did not provide any information about the suspects.

On the net, Twitter users expressed anger and sadness with the hashtags #JusticeforZainab and #AnotherZainab.

Zainab is the girl's name.

Many were reminded of a case two years ago.

At the time, a seven-year-old girl named Zainab was abused and murdered.

The perpetrator Imran Ali was sentenced to death and hanged.

40 children killed

At the time, politicians, activists and celebrities demanded more protection for children from the government.

According to "Dawn", parliament passed a law in 2019 that should facilitate the investigation of child abuse and tightened the penalties for such acts.

The police have also developed an app in which crimes against children are collected and the progress of the investigation is documented.

Nevertheless, violence against children is still a problem in the country.

In the first half of the year alone, almost 1,500 child abuse cases were known.

17 boys and 13 girls were murdered after sexual abuse.
