Revenue generated by automatic speed cameras fell in 2019 for the second year in a row, reaching 760 million euros (-12.0%), according to figures released Friday by Road Safety.
Until 2018 (864.4 million euros), the amount of fixed and increased fines had continued to increase since the implementation of automatic speed cameras in 2003, even exceeding the symbolic bar of one billion euros in 2017.
The previous interministerial delegate for Road Safety, Emmanuel Barbe, explained that the decrease observed between 2017 and 2018 was in part linked to the destruction of radars in the wake of the movement of yellow vests.
Since 2018, the park has also decreased: there were 4,428 automatic speed cameras that year, against 4,094 in 2019, which generated 12.56 million tickets.

According to this official report, published as an annex to the 2021 finance bill, 86.8% of revenue was devoted to the fight against road insecurity (improvement of the road network, maintenance of radars, etc.), the rest to debt reduction. of State.
The share dedicated to road insecurity thus increased by more than seven points compared to 2018 (79.1%), with in particular the creation of a budget of 26 million euros "for the benefit of health establishments to improve treatment of road injuries ”explains Road Safety.
