A lot of words have been written recently about learning from home, synchronous learning, independent learning.

Quite a few writers will probably agree that distance learning needs to be upgraded, improved, tightened more tightly, but most of all - most of them will probably agree that it is less suitable for first grade children who have not yet established their learning skills.

First graders who have just started the track at school and entered under its gates on September 1st with the excitement that will be remembered for years - stay put.

After attempts to teach the basics of reading and writing remotely, the Ministry of Education announced that language teachers should stop learning to read and write and focus on reading stories and expanding vocabulary orally.

4 children study zoom in one house.

How does this affect them?

This directive comes against the background of months that we are not in a regular school routine, when already in the previous year, quite a few parents were bothered by the gaps created in the learning of compulsory children in the second half of the year.

So what and if we can do in the meantime?

Developmentally, we are accustomed to seeing the change that has taken place in our children in the first year of school, and language development may reflect to us the gradual transition from intuitive thinking to more logical thinking.

However, at the moment, when the gear of reading and writing is in neutral - we have the opportunity to teach them the skills of listening, observing and understanding the other, and to serve as an example for them to organize and self-regulate our inner self towards learning.

With all the stress and the desire to realize that the child has made the leap - we will take a breath.

She and he knew how to write and read, even if not until Hanukkah.

Remember, your children do not necessarily lose.

Over the years, even in routine times, the education system has had various methods for learning the language and of course, also arithmetic, which have not always been defined as successful.

At the beginning of the decade, for example, the Ministry of Education's reading instruction committee ruled that the method prevalent until then (eliminating punctuation, eliminating error correction during study, etc.) was based on guesswork and made it difficult to understand what was being read.

So you probably don't have to have a global epidemic to create gaps.

A large system moves slowly and repairs, even if they are in motion, take time.

Parents, do not become your children's teachers

As parents, we were suddenly given without asking for the role of teacher, when most of us do not have the curricula, skills, nor the experience or time needed to teach our children.

In order to generate healthy curiosity and joy of learning in the shadow of the plague - it would be right for the Ministry of Education to establish a database of 'reading and writing amusements' and recommendations for the benefit of parents of first graders.

A database that will contain easy and clear content for parents to use, such as drawing letters, knowing their names, visually distinguishing between letters and establishing awareness of sounds.

This too can be a language lesson.

Until that happens, and while the relationship with teachers trained to teach verbal literacy remains digital - let's let the scaffolding climb for our children.

We will create opportunities and allow experiences in the "home lab" and during the hours of joint stay (so long these days).

This can be through exposure to writing on road signs or advertisements, joint and correct drawing of the letters, making cookies in the shape of the child's name, leaving small notes with affectionate words (in large and dotted letters), re-reading a word or sentence in first reading booklets, searching for dedicated cooking recipes For children and joint preparation that will improve the understanding of what is heard and read.

We can teach these to our children in an experiential way, while moving and not as a structured lesson, and create an infrastructure for connecting what the child hears with the written pattern.

The most important lesson right now is on your bookshelf

Reading and reading books, whether at home, together in the blanket, or with the teacher Zoom, enrich the child's inner world and connect it to a rainbow of emotions and struggles, help assimilate values that are important to us, connect the child's logic that develops in early childhood and develop his language .

Our modeling, as always, is a thousand times more important than our statements, so, if you are reading - read next to them, share and tell about the pleasure you got from reading.

If you are writing a list for a grocery store, a note to a neighbor or a reminder for activities on a weekly calendar - try to write in large print and show it to the child.

When writing, where when one hand writes and the other supports holding the page or calendar, and thus, the example of proper posture will also be an enriching source of learning.

Ultimately, beyond missing out on learning learning materials on time or difficulty understanding the content, the thing that is harder to correct or improve on later is the child’s sense of ability and it totally starts at home.

An intimate family atmosphere and planting a sense of security in the child, his abilities and capabilities is a significant part of his ability to free up, adjust and arrive with high motivation to learn.

If on the one hand, we set expectations according to the situation (hint: not too high), and on the other hand, we encourage him (or her of course) for every experience, effort, adjustment, success in small steps - we create a sequence of good experiences that contribute to his value and self-belief. .

Language skills are easier to correct than a sense of ability.

With all the desire to see progress and stick to routine and what sells, the corona devours our cards and produces for all of us a new and different tomorrow. Reading and writing skills are undoubtedly one of the important achievements that contribute to the continuation of learning and communication in the world, but as the children are in difficulty or anxiety, they feel the tense atmosphere at home - they may have difficulty acquiring them. Stress, striving for perfection, an atmosphere that leaves no room for mistakes, comparisons to other children or older siblings will not advance us and our children and will probably produce the complete opposite.

Until the sky clears, and the Koran fades, we will all try to make learning goals more flexible, and cultivate mainly social, cultural skills, listening, listening, understanding and empathy for the environment and the community, which will do no less important work on the way to language lessons.

And if after all something mediated does not work for you correctly or you seem to recognize a certain difficulty in the child - do not be alone with it. Contact the class educator and ask for guidance, help and referral to relevant enrichment materials, and no less important - consult a pediatrician regarding hearing and vision tests.
