(ANSA) - MINSK, 18 OCT - Over 100 people were arrested in Minsk, Belarus, during the march against President Alexander Lukashenko, who took several thousand people despite police threats to open fire. "More than 100 people have been detained in Minsk so far," said the spokeswoman for the Belarusian Interior Ministry, Olga Chemodanova.
The former Soviet nation is gripped by protests after Lukashenko claimed victory in the 9 August elections over Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, the popular opposition candidate. In a message sent before the protest, Tikhanovskaya urged Belarusians to carry out their demands "in a peaceful but persistent manner". (HANDLE).
