Although the bathing season this year was shorter than usual, and despite Corona's limitations, 7 children drowned, according to an organization's report before child safety. This is a 26% decrease compared to the average for the years 2015-2019, which stood at 16 cases.

The 2020 bathing season was shorter than usual and in parts of it closures were imposed that prevented access to the pools and beaches.

In addition, the holiday season was limited due to the corona limitations and the proliferation of home isolations.

An organization's report before shows that 7 children drowned during the bathing season. One case occurred in a home pool and another six cases in the public space - two children drowned in the Sea of Galilee, two in the sea, one in a cistern, and one in a river.

An examination of the total number of drownings in the bathing seasons 2015-2020 shows that 72% of the drownings occurred in the public space and 27% of the cases occurred in the home and yard.

The data also show that in four of the drowning cases there were teenagers (ages 14-17), two in the age group 5-9 and one child under the age of 4.

Looking at the 2015-2020 data, the age groups of 0-4 and 15-17 are at increased risk of mortality as a result of drowning during the bathing season: their relative share in mortality is 1.3 times and 2.2 times their relative share in the population respectively.

All boys in the 15-17 age group died in the public space.

Looking at the 0-4 age group, the main imprint scene is the home and its surroundings which make up 61% of the cases.

Orly Silvinger, CEO of the organization Before Child Safety: “The summer of 2020 was exceptional.

Part of the summer we were under restrictions of closure or isolation, and spent less time in B & Bs, vacations, pools and the sea.

Many families changed the routine familiar to them, and the fear of the corona led to a reality in which the nuclear family was united and parents were more present and available to the children.

"Despite this, seven children lost their lives in drowning this year as well. Drowning is the second most common cause of death in child injuries. Every child who drowned and lost his life left a huge void in the hearts of his family and acquaintances." In other cases, the children will suffer lifelong damage. "

"The official bathing season is over, but the weather is still hot and we would like to remind parents, do not tell me it will not happen - in an environment of water do not leave unattended children under 5 or do not know how to swim. When there is more than one adult "Touching and without distraction. A home pool should be fenced with an automatically locked gate. Pools that are not fenced should be emptied immediately after use. Swimming lessons save lives and are recommended from the age of 4 and according to the child's abilities."
