In his office there was a collage with pictures of Hitler, he covered up a colleague, although he knew about a racist chat: A police officer from Traunstein has been sentenced to a suspended sentence.

The district court of Traunstein has sentenced an officer of the criminal police to eleven months imprisonment on probation for thwarting punishment in office and for using Nazi symbols.

According to a spokeswoman, the court saw it as proven that the 53-year-old had not initiated an investigation against another official, even though he was the author of a racist chat.

The convict, who worked in the state security department, had also hung a collage in his office in 2015, on which swastikas, an SS rune and images of Hitler could be seen.

Therefore, the court also sentenced him for using symbols of unconstitutional organizations.

Colleague started an investigation

The prosecutor had asked for a suspended sentence of one year and eight months.

The man's defense attorney had pleaded for acquittal.

According to Bayerischer Rundfunk, he had questioned the credibility of a colleague of his client.

The woman had therefore started the investigation.

The 53-year-old apologized for the investigation errors, but denied any guilt.

In his closing remarks before the verdict was pronounced, he distanced himself from right-wing ideas, according to BR.

He has been a police officer for 30 years and has been suspended from duty for a year and a half.
