(ANSA) - ISTANBUL, OCTOBER 21 - The Iranian lawyer for human rights Nasrin Sotoudeh, sentenced to 33 years and 148 lashes, was transferred from Evin prison in Tehran to that of Qarchak, over 30 km south of the capital.

This was reported by RezaKhandan, husband of the well-known activist, winner of the Sakharov prize of the European Parliament in 2012.

In the new penitentiary, "the health conditions are deplorable", especially in light of the risks of coronavirus contagion, reports Khandan, according to which his 57-year-old wife was instead expected to be taken to hospital for angiography ordered by the doctors of the Evin prison.

Since March, over 100,000 inmates have been released from prison in Iran due to the Covid-19 emergency, but many political prisoners have been excluded from the benefits.

Sotoudeh had conducted a hunger strike in the past few weeks, now interrupted in protest.

The lawyer, who has defended numerous activists against the mandatory veil and has spent herself against the death penalty, is serving the longest sentence of 12 years in prison for "inciting corruption and dissolution".
