Laurent Pie admits:
"Here, we are a bit part of the soundscape."
This Saturday, October 24, the carillonneur and his co-owner Elizabeth Vitu will climb the 220 steps of the bell tower of Saint-Jean-le-Vieux, adjoining the Saint-Jean-Baptiste cathedral, to kick off the 34th edition of the Festival of sacred music from Perpignan, one of the most important in Europe, with 250 guest artists from all over the world.
Initially scheduled for April, the event was postponed, thanks to the determination of its director, Elisabeth Dooms.
From October 24 to 31, the event will see great names in baroque and world music parade (from flourishing Arts to Ballaké Sissoko, including Le Concert spirituel d'Hervé Niquet and contemporary pianist Francesco Tristano).
And no question of not opening to the sound of the chime.
“This instrument is quite a symbol,
explains Laurent Pie, the only carillonneur in France officially appointed by the episcopate, as well as his colleague Elizabeth.
