In view of the large number of people infected with corona and the associated overloading of the health authorities in Berlin, the authorities are relying on a new strategy.

Therefore, in the future, infected people and contact persons in Berlin will be obliged to self-quarantine without an individual medical order, said Health Senator Dilek Kalayci (SPD).

People with a positive test result in Berlin are therefore now called upon to go into domestic isolation as quickly as possible without contacting the health department.

In addition, they should inform contact persons quickly about the infection so that they can go into quarantine.

The new rules are to be communicated to the citizens through an information campaign.

Kalayci called on all people to limit their social contacts and "hold back" in view of the current pandemic situation.

Neukölln's Vice District Mayor Falko Liecke (CDU) said after the consultations with the Senator that the "overflow" of cases at the health authorities was now so high that it could no longer be processed without delay even with additional staff.

The offices could therefore "not always immediately" contact all those affected.

One is now placing more emphasis on the personal responsibility of infected people and their contact persons, said Kalayci.

In corona tests and contact tracking, the focus is on risk groups, such as staff and patients in hospitals and care or homeless people.

"That doesn't mean that the other contacts aren't being followed up," said Kalayci.

"But it will take some time there."

Medical officers had called for a change in strategy.
