(ANSA) - ROME, OCTOBER 23 - The data on tourism in Spain continue to be very negative due to the coronavirus pandemic.
According to data released today by the National Statistics Institute (Ine) and reported by the Spanish media, the number of hotel nights booked by tourists dropped by 78% in September compared to the same month last year.
A 64% lower number recorded in August.
Tourism represents 12% of the Spanish GDP.
Overall, hotel bookings in the first nine months of the year dropped by 71% compared to the same period last year. The northern regions of Cantabria and Asturias had the highest levels of hotel occupancy in September, with 37% and 35% respectively. A glimmer of hope for Spain came yesterday when the UK and Germany raised warnings against travel to the Canary Islands, potentially saving part of the archipelago's winter season. (HANDLE).
