Curfews and car: vacation or weekend trips, which trips are authorized?

2020-10-23T17:22:21.032Z

Can I leave a city subject to the restrictions? Drive through one? The answers to your questions.

For some, it's time to go on vacation and everything may not go as planned.

Blame it on this damn virus, which every week or so brings its share of restrictions, as it spreads.

Thursday afternoon, Prime Minister Jean Castex announced a very broad extension of the application of the curfew between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.

46 million French people are now called upon to comply with these measures.

But should we forget about departures from the municipalities concerned during this time slot?

The answers to your questions.

Can I leave a city with a curfew after 9:00 p.m.?

This is one of the easiest cases to understand.

And the answer is no, except for travel authorized by exemption.

As a reminder, these are the following trips:

  • Travel between the home and the place of exercise of the professional activity or the place of education and training is authorized.

This type of travel is limited to the strict journey between home and the place of work or training.

  • Travel for consultations and care that cannot be provided remotely (e.g. an appointment at the hospital or a doctor) and cannot be postponed or for the purchase of health products (e.g. in pharmacies ) are allowed.

Veterinary emergencies are also affected by this exemption.

  • Travel for compelling family reasons, for assistance to vulnerable people (eg the elderly) and precarious persons or for childcare is authorized.

  • Travel by people with disabilities and their companions is authorized.

The security forces show good judgment and tolerance towards people having difficulty downloading and filling in the certificate given their disability or vulnerability.

  • Travel to respond to a judicial or administrative summons (for example to the court or to the police station) is authorized.

  • Travel to participate in missions of general interest (such as marauding or actions in favor of the homeless) at the request of the administrative authority are authorized.

The police use their best judgment regarding the beneficiaries of this aid.

  • Travel related to public transport transits for long-distance journeys, via train stations or airports, are authorized.

  • Short trips, within a maximum radius of one kilometer around the home, for the needs of pets, are authorized.

In all these cases, you should bring a duly completed certificate (to download from this address), to provide to the police in the event of an inspection.

In the case of business trips, the document must also be signed by the employer.

If you intended to go on holiday on Saturday from 9 p.m. from Lyon, Marseille or any other city affected by the curfew, this will not be possible.

Even if your place of destination is not covered by the restriction measures.

Can I reach a city affected by the restriction measures during curfew hours?

In the same way, "it is advisable to make arrangements to arrive outside the hours of the curfew", specify the authorities.

Can I simply walk through an area affected by the curfew?

If, during your journey between two zones not covered by the restriction measures, you are forced to cross a "portion of motorway, ring road or road located in a curfew zone", you will be able to do your journey.

And whether it is a departure on vacation or any other reason.

Because it is "a simple transit between the two zones without curfew", specify the authorities.

However, as much as possible, avoid entering metropolitan areas affected by the curfew.

Because it would not necessarily be easy to prove good faith in the event of an inspection.

What if I go by train or plane?

This time it changes everything.

This will undoubtedly be painful to motorists, but train and plane tickets will serve as proof.

Rail and air traffic is maintained during curfew hours.

With a ticket, you can get to the station or the airport by the means of transport of your choice.

It will suffice to show your ticket to the police in case of control.

Likewise, you can travel to pick up a member of your family at the station or at the airport during curfew hours, provided you tick the “compelling family reason” box on your certificate.

Remember that if these rules are not respected, you risk a fine of 135 euros.

The third violation found is punishable by a fine of 3,500 euros and a sentence of three months' imprisonment.
