(ANSA) - BRUSSELS, OCTOBER 23 - Italians are the most distrustful of the EU.

In the months of the pandemic, trust in EU institutions dropped to 28%, reaching the lowest level in Europe.

It emerges from the latest Eurobarometer of the EU Commission.

Compared to the last survey of autumn 2019, the confidence of Italians has dropped by ten percentage points.

Asked about their satisfaction with EU measures against the pandemic, 58% of Italians said they were 'dissatisfied', scoring the fourth worst result in the EU.

After Italians, the lowest levels of confidence are recorded in France (30%) and Greece (32%).

The peaks are instead observed in Ireland (73%) and Denmark (63%).

With the collapse of confidence, in Italy the feeling of belonging to the EU also reaches the lowest point in Europe, at 48%.

Italy is the only country in the Union - underlines the survey conducted between July and August - in which the majority of citizens do not feel European.

Membership of the European project in the Twenty-Seven stands on average at 70%, with Irish and Luxembourg squads (both at 89%).

The priorities that the EU should adopt in the face of the pandemic are rather shared across the Union.

According to 35% of Italians and 37% of Europeans, the first thing Brussels should do now is to find the financial resources to find a vaccine.

There is also the need to develop a strategy to face a similar crisis in the future (required by 33% of Italians and 37% of Europeans) and to adopt a common health policy (31% Italians, 30% Europeans).

The personal experiences of Europeans regarding the lockdown and other restrictive measures are very different.

Overall, almost three out of ten Europeans say it was a fairly easy time (31%), while for a quarter (25%) it was "quite difficult".

This latter sentiment is the most shared by Italians (39%).
