A long-awaited first step.
This Friday, the popular measure to extend paternity leave to 28 days - including 7 compulsory - was voted in the National Assembly at first reading.
It should a priori enter into force without incident from July 1, 2021, for the father or the second parent of a newborn.
This extension to nearly a month was desired, in particular by feminist associations who consider that it should promote equality between men and women in the company or in the distribution of daily household tasks.
Funded by Social Security
Currently, paternity leave is eleven days, in addition to the three days of birth (14 in total).

The Elysee had announced this doubling on September 22 and the deputies adopted by 63 votes for and two abstentions this flagship measure of the draft social security budget for 2021 (PLFSS), presented on October 7 in the Council of Ministers.
The extension will indeed be financed by Social Security, at a cost also doubled and estimated at more than 500 million euros in a full year.
On the other hand, the three days of birth leave will always be the responsibility of the employer, and the remaining 25 days will be compensated by Social Security.
