Many need their coffee in the morning to really wake up.
One study shows that coffee on an empty stomach can have negative metabolic effects.
Get up early and stagger to the coffee machine * while half asleep?
A new study by the
University of Bath
in the “British Journal of Nutrition”
shows why this is not a good idea
.
Don't worry, you don't have to do without your beloved
hot drink
completely
to start the day.
But there is one thing
to consider
when
enjoying coffee
that can make a huge difference to your
metabolism
.

Study shows link between sleep quality, breakfast and caffeine
The relationship between
sleep
,
coffee
and
blood sugar levels was
examined
.
The researchers were particularly interested in the question: How well does the body's own regulation of blood sugar work after a night of good sleep and after a night of disturbed sleep?
For this purpose, 29 study participants were examined in three nights and on three mornings with different scenarios:
A night of normal sleep: In the morning, the test subjects were given a sugary drink that mimics breakfast with sufficient glucose and calories.
A restless night with hourly wakes: In the morning there was the simulated breakfast again.
A night with restless sleep due to waking up every hour: In the morning there was first a
cup of strong coffee
(around 300 milligrams of caffeine) and half an hour later the breakfast substitute.
All test subjects ran through all scenarios, and their blood sugar levels were measured all the time.
Also interesting:
paper cups or porcelain cups: this is actually how coffee tastes best.
Do not drink coffee before breakfast - this can lead to diabetes
One result of the experiment: coffee that is drunk before breakfast can have a
negative effect on
the
metabolism
- especially if you have
suffered from
sleep disorders
during
the night
.
The blood values of the test subjects who drank coffee before breakfast after a restless night had a blood sugar level that was around 50 percent higher than that of the other participants.
This suggests that caffeine may cause insulin insensitivity.
The problem: A very often
high blood sugar level
, for example through a diet rich in sugar, can promote the development of
type 2 diabetes mellitus
.
In addition, a rapid drop in blood sugar levels can
lead
to
food cravings
.
The positive news: This negative effect can be mitigated by
first eating something
in the morning
and drinking coffee later.
