President Luis Lacalle Pou announced this Thursday that Uruguay will close its borders during the summer season due to the coronavirus pandemic.
In a press conference, the president remarked: "
It will be a basically restricted summer with closed borders in our country
."
"As a result of reports that we have had (...) it will be a restricted summer, the borders will be basically closed with exceptions, which are already known and perhaps some more," said Lacalle Pou.
The Uruguayan newspaper
El País
highlighted the president's words at the press conference in the Executive Tower in which he said that they are facing "
a boost from the pandemic, breaking world records
."
Lacalle Pou was with the Secretary of the Presidency,
Álvaro Delgado
;
the Minister of Public Health,
Daniel Salinas
;
and the director of the Office of Planning and Budget,
Isaac Alfie
.
"The director of OPP just remembered that
it is not the first time that we have to back down,
" said the president, recalling the case of the department of Treinta y Tres, when he decided to suspend face-to-face classes for two weeks in the city of Rivera.
"We understand recreation, the vocation to socialize, but it is clear that we
must avoid circulation, meetings, parties,
