The former Bayern star Luca Toni was attacked and robbed by three armed men in his villa not far from the northern Italian city of Modena.

This was reported by the daily "Gazzetta di Modena".

The robbers broke into the home of the 43-year-old 2006 world champion on Thursday evening while he was there with his two children.

The hooded men threatened Toni with a weapon and forced him to hand over jewelry and other items.

The police are looking for the gang using video from a surveillance camera, it said.

"The most important thing is that my family is fine. We suffered a shock, but we are all fine, nothing has been harmed to anyone," Toni wrote on Instagram.

It is regrettable that items with a high memory value were stolen from him.

He also asked for respect and privacy for his family.

Toni had played for FC Bayern from 2007 to 2009 and ended his career with Hellas Verona in 2016.
