A study with 4,400 participants found: Those who take a certain drug are less likely to die of a coronavirus infection.

  • A meaningful study result: If people take a blood thinner, their risk of dying from Covid-19 is halved.

  • American researchers concluded this after evaluating the data from almost 4,400 coronavirus patients.

  • Find out here how the use

of blood thinners and the course of a Covid 19 disease are

    related.

Munich - How exactly a coronavirus infection affects the body has not yet been conclusively clarified.

But some studies have come to the conclusion that Covid-19 can be associated with thrombosis * - with sometimes fatal consequences.

"

It has long been known in the clinics that thromboembolic events are a common complication of Covid-19,

" said Uwe Janssens, President of the German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine (DIVI) in Berlin. Treatment recommendations have already been published been quoted by the editorial network Germany (RND).

And this is where a drug comes into play that can protect against thrombosis: so-called

blood thinners reduce the risk of blood clots forming in arteries and veins thanks to their anticoagulant effect

.

Anticoagulant drugs are used in the following patients, among others:

  • People with advanced arterial calcification

  • People who have a congenital tendency towards increased blood clotting

  • as a supplement to the therapy of heart attacks, strokes and embolisms

  • in people who have had a thrombosis

  • Before, after and during surgery, when the patient has to lie in bed for a long time

In an experiment, US researchers had also used blood thinners on Covid 19 patients - they published their results in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

For the study, almost 4,400 patients were divided into three groups

: One received no blood thinners, the second group received a high dose of blood thinners and the third group received a low dose, which is also used to prevent thrombosis.

Therapy with blood thinners: Patients need less artificial ventilation

"There was a strong association between blood thinners and a reduced likelihood of death in hospital: both therapeutic and prophylactic doses of anticoagulant drugs

reduced mortality by about 50 percent

compared to patients who were not given blood thinners," said a statement by the Mount Sinai Hospital group that participated in the study.

In addition, the risk of artificial ventilation also decreased in both groups, as reported by the RND.

Patients who had been given a high dose of blood thinners had to be connected to a ventilator 31 percent less often, and those with a prophylactic dose 28 percent less often.

The extent to which the therapy with blood thinners could be incorporated into the Covid-19 treatment as standard is still being discussed.
