(ANSA) - ROME, OCTOBER 26 - China and the United States are the top two countries in the world for the number of 5G smartphones sold, but if you look at the adoption rate - and that is how many 5G devices are out of the total phones sold - then it is Western Europe to excel.
This was revealed by the researchers of StrategyAnalytics, who underline the strong appreciation of some markets for devices compatible with the new mobile networks.
At the top of the European countries is Switzerland, where in 2020 three smartphones sold out of five (59%) will be 5G.
Germany and the United Kingdom follow with a tie with 32%.
Just outside the podium is Spain, where one in five smartphones (20%) will be 5G.
Then it is the turn of Italy, with 5G models that will represent 14% of smartphones sold, and of France, where the percentage will stop at 4%.
According to analysts, however, the proportions will change in 2021, when Germany and the United Kingdom will take first place with over three out of four smartphones (77%) compatible with the new cellular networks, while Switzerland will stand at 72%.
Spain will rise to 47%, Italy to 41% and France to 32%.
"The rapid adoption of 5G smartphones by Western European consumers presents an opportunity for manufacturers," observes analyst Ken Hyers.
"Samsung and Apple are getting the lion's share, but aggressive competition from Vivo, Oppo, Xiaomi and other Chinese suppliers will order market shares in 2021".
5G, he adds, will give these companies the opportunity to "grow in 2021 and beyond".
