ROME - From the bronze Crucifixion, the only contemporary work in the Roman basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo, to the monument of hope of the "Cow nursing the calf" at Campo Zero in Amatrice destroyed by the earthquake.
The sculptor Alfiero Nena died in the night in the capital.
He was born in Treviso in 1933 but has lived and worked in Rome since 1959. A pupil of Emilio Greco, he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts and until 1995 he accompanied his intense artistic activity with teaching in the Art Schools and Institutes Art of the capital.
In his art he tested all materials with the utmost predilection for iron, of which he was a true master.
His masterpiece is the bronze "Cristo Lux mundi", housed in Santa Maria del Popolo since 1990, but works by Nena are exhibited in the Vatican Sacred Grottoes, at the Museo Tesoro di S.
Pietro, to the Enpaia all'Eur, in many squares in Rome, on Monte Tiberio in Capri among the remains of the Villa Jovis with the large statue of the Madonna del Soccorso, then in Sicily, in Piacenza, in Terni, in Sorrento, at Lake Orta and in many countries including France, Switzerland, the United States and Argentina.
His beloved Treviso, his hometown, preserves
the great iron horse "Libero", the two athletes of the Biennale and terracotta sculptures, including a bust of the former mayor Giancarlo Gentilini
, in the Museum of S.
Caterina.
He also won the commemorative medals for athletes in various editions of the Rome Marathon.
In 1992 he founded the Cultural Association Fidia, which each year awards a prize to students who have distinguished themselves in the field of art.
In 1995 he participated in the Venice Biennale with two iron sculptures exhibiting at Villa Pisani in Strà.
Since 1997 he has been honorary president of the National Association of Italian Sculptors (Ansi).
His passion for art has accompanied him until the last few years.
In 2018 he wanted to give a message of hope and solidarity by donating the monument of the cow with the calf to Amatrice, dedicated in particular to the farmers and ranchers of the center destroyed by the earthquake of August 2016.
The base was symbolically made with the stones of the collapsed buildings.
Alfiero Nena's funeral will be held tomorrow, October 26, at 4 pm in the parish of St. Bernadette in Colli Aniene where the statue of the Blessed Virgin of the Reception is located.
The octave will be held at the Roman Basilica of S. Maria del Popolo.
