112, a single emergency call number which brings together the current 15 (Samu), 17 (police) and 18 (firefighters), will soon be tested on the scale of an "entire region", announced Tuesday the National Federation of Firefighters (FNSPP) after a meeting with Emmanuel Macron.

The President of the Republic, who received the FNSPP on Monday at the Elysee Palace, "wishes to carry out an experiment on an entire region," Colonel Grégory Allione, president of this federation which oversees the 247,000 sappers, told AFP. firefighters in France.

Emergencies: the single call number is on the table again

The experimental region has not yet stopped, but a working meeting with the government is scheduled "before the end of the year" to move forward on this subject, he said.

Overloaded by calls of all kinds, firefighters have been calling for years to redesign the emergency call system to be able to focus on crucial interventions.

To do this, they want 112 to be identified as a unique emergency number and backed up by common call platforms in each department in order to centralize calls to the Samu, the police and the fire department.

At the same time, they are calling for the establishment of a number 116 117, dedicated to non-emergency medical services.

"We will have to educate the populations"

“To switch to this system, we will have to educate the populations,” added Mr. Allione.

“Everyone must understand that going to the emergency room for something benign saturates our emergencies and wastes everyone's time.

There will be a whole education to do.

"

In an internal vitriolic report on the management of the first wave of the Covid-19 epidemic, the FNSPP denounced in July the saturation of the emergency number 15, regulated by the Samu with, according to it, times of wait sometimes around forty minutes.

This document, which had leaked to the press, also regretted that the management of the crisis had been entrusted to the Ministry of Health and its regional health agencies, to the detriment of the Ministry of the Interior and the prefects.

While the government has just instituted a curfew and is considering toughening measures to try to stem the second wave of the epidemic, the meeting with President Macron was the opportunity to discuss "crisis management pragmatic, ”explained Allione.

“What we perceive is that the prefects are more on the maneuver and we want them to stay on the maneuver.

They are the ones who can mobilize all the players in a department, ”he said.
