Lukas Balk learns at home: His absence is considered unexcused

Compulsory schooling, it could happen to the Balk family, is more important in Germany than their health.
Since the summer holidays, parents have been fighting to ensure that their eldest son does not have to go to school.
They fear that he will be infected with the corona virus there and then infect his younger siblings or his father.
They belong to a risk group.
They suffer from a certain form of anemia and their immune system is weakened.
An infection could probably be dangerous for them.
For months they have been almost exclusively at home, wearing masks outside, keeping their distance, disinfecting hands.
Olaf Balk works in the home office, Undine Balk takes care of the household and children - and, together with her husband, also takes care of homeschooling.
That is exhausting.
However, they do not currently see an alternative to teaching at home.
"We want to decide for ourselves what risk we expose ourselves to," says the mother.
24 children for hours in a confined space, without distance or mask - and the only solution is ventilation?
The Balks do not trust this hygiene concept.
