(ANSA) - ROME, OCTOBER 28 - Following a dramatic attack by a shark in the waters of the famous Egyptian tourist resort of Sharm el Sheikh, a 12-year-old boy saw his hand amputated.
His mother and their guide were also attacked and injured, and as a result, the Egyptian authorities suspended all activities at the popular local Ras Mohammed dive site.
This was reported by the Arab News online newspaper, specifying that the boy and his mother had come on vacation to Egypt from Ukraine.
When they were attacked by the shark, at least two meters in length, they were snorkeling.
The state daily Ahram wrote that the Egyptian Environment Minister announced in a statement that it had "decided to suspend all activities in the vicinity of the attack site, in accordance with current global practice in the case of shark attacks on humans."
After the amputation of the hand, the boy remains hospitalized in intensive care.
In recent years Arab News recalls, Egypt has been the scene of several shark attacks.
In 2018, a Czech tourist was killed in Marsa Alam in and 2010 and a German woman was killed in 2010 during a wave of five attacks in just a few days.
