Following a dramatic attack by a shark in the waters of the famous Egyptian tourist resort of Sharm el Sheikh, a 12-year-old boy had his hand amputated.
His mother and their guide were also attacked and injured, and as a result, Egyptian authorities have suspended all activities at the popular local Ras Mohammed dive site.
This was reported by the Arab News online newspaper, specifying that the boy and his mother had come on vacation to Egypt from Ukraine.
When they were attacked by the shark, at least two meters long, they were snorkeling.
The state daily Ahram wrote that Egypt's Ministry of Environment announced in a statement that it had "decided to suspend all activities in the vicinity of the attack site, in accordance with current global practice in the event of shark attacks against human beings".
After the hand amputation, the boy remains hospitalized in intensive care.
In recent years Arab News recalls, Egypt has been the scene of several shark attacks. In 2018, a Czech tourist was killed in Marsa Alam in and 2010 and a German woman was killed in 2010 during a spate of five attacks in just a few days.
