In the summer of 2019, the BND was informed that a Syrian wanted to commit an attack after being released from prison. The Saxon authorities only achieved this now - after the fatal knife attack in Dresden.

In 2019, the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) received explosive information about the alleged Dresden knife bomber Abdullah al-HH.

The tip, however, remained with the BND.

The Saxon security authorities and the Office for the Protection of the Constitution only found out about this after the arrest of the Syrian who allegedly killed one man and injured another in October.

The tip comes from a foreign secret service and reached the BND in August 2019. According to SPIEGEL information, the partner service explicitly pointed out that Abdullah al-HH was in prison in Saxony - and that he wanted to carry out an attack after his release.

The young Syrian was serving a three-year prison sentence for getting instructions for a suicide bombing.

A handful of other alleged Islamists with whom the Syrian is allegedly connected were also named in the foreign partner's report.

Among them was a woman who, like Abdullah al-HH, lived in Dresden and at the time had to answer in court for soliciting supporters of the IS terrorist group.

First, WDR, NDR and SZ reported on the information left with the BND.

In the federal government the process is called an error.

However, it is questionable whether the 20-year-old's assessment would have changed significantly if the Saxon authorities had been aware of the information.

They themselves assumed that Abdullah al-HH would pose a threat after his release from prison.

In July 2020, an assessment using the "Radar iTE" forecasting tool revealed the risk level "high".

After his release at the end of September, the Syrian had to report to the Dresden police three times a week. He was looked after by deradicalization experts from the Violence Prevention Network.

The Saxon constitution protection agency observed him at times.

Nevertheless, Abdullah al-HH apparently managed to buy several knives and stab the couple from North Rhine-Westphalia on the evening of October 4th in Dresden's old town.

The alleged assassin was arrested 16 days after the crime, and the investigators found his DNA on a victim's shoe.

The investigators are examining a possible homophobic motive.

Al-HH had already revealed hatred of gays in chats years ago.
