"Lockdown means laughter down to me," says Michael Mittermeier. Here he talks about the pandemic as a threat to the entertainment industry - and as a source of new material.

SPIEGEL:

Mr. Mittermeier, in your new book you joke about the corona pandemic.

Can you do that?

Mittermeier:

You can and you have to.

I don't tell jokes, I tell stories.

And there are a lot of really funny, weird, insane corona stories.

If someone is bothered by these stories, I can't help it either.

SPIEGEL:

The virus killed thousands of people in Germany alone.

Mittermeier:

It's not my job to make people sad.

My job is to make people forget the madness for a moment.

SPIEGEL:

It is often said that Corona is a burning glass for social grievances.

You write that in truth it is a shot glass.

Mittermeier:

Certainly Korinthenkackers will come and say that you shouldn't write as lightly as I about alcohol and drinking in lockdown.

Sure, there are many who have a problem with alcohol.

But I'm a comedian, not a scientist or a doctor.

People are happy to hear that everyday corona is just as insane for others as it is for themselves. It helps them.
