The expansion of the coronavirus continues, at least for now, on the rise.

The notification this Thursday is 23,580 diagnoses in one day, which is a new record for the entire pandemic.

"The data are bad," said the director of the Center for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies (CCAES), Fernando Simón, although he pointed out that there seems to be "some slowdown" in the figures of some communities, although it is still early "To see if they are significant."

The cumulative incidence at 14 days per 100,000 inhabitants, of 468.17, and the 790 deaths in one week (173 reported on the last day) are clear indicators of this.

But, in addition, "hospital occupancy is growing very little by little and is already at 14.2%, and that of ICUs stands at almost 26% [it is exactly 25.8%]", also the worst numbers of this wave.

The total number of deaths in this report amounts to 35,639, because it only includes deaths with a PCR that proves the infection, although the calculations of the National Institute of Statistics and the Carlos III Health Institute raise this figure to about 60,000.

All the communities except Madrid and Murcia have experienced increases in its incidence.

Simón has warned that it is still too early to see the effect of measures such as the curfew, which has not been in force for a week.

He recalled that there is a delay of one week from the application of the measures until their effect is seen in the number of cases and another seven days until it is appreciated in the hospitalizations.

"It is still too early to take more drastic measures," he said when asked about the possibility of decreeing home confinements.

"The shadow of the home closure and of schools and universities is planning for everyone," said Simón, but this "must be the last."

On the perimeter confinement of Madrid, which will be for days, Simón has indicated that being shorter will have less effect, but that something will be noticed.

Keeping the measures longer increases their effectiveness, he said.

Apart from the Canary Islands, Simón has confirmed that Galicia, Cantabria, Murcia and the Valencian Community are not at high risk.

Neither are the small islands of the Balearic Islands.

The rest of the country is in high or extreme danger.

Despite this, he has defended that cinemas, theaters and museums remain open.

"No outbreak has been reported in them," he explained.

The danger is in the crowds when entering or leaving the facilities or in which sooner or later people tend to stay.

The health official has pointed out, however, that although Spain started the second wave before the rest of Europe, it is now advancing at a slower pace.

And he has put forward some hypotheses for this to have been the case.

For example, he mentioned that in Spain, especially in summer, there are other customs and other ways of relating, with large family groups and high internal mobility that does not occur in other countries on the continent.

"It was going so well in May and June that it was opened to tourism," he pointed out as another cause.
