It is in fact very probable, according to what is learned from qualified sources, that the value of Rt has exceeded the 1.5 recorded last week and referred to the period 12-18 October.
This is due to the sharp increase in cases.
Rt above 1.5 is one of the elements that outlines the most serious scenario of the epidemic.
Currently, on the basis of the 4 scenarios described in the ISS document,
Italy is placed in scenario 3, with a situation characterized by "sustained and widespread transmissibility"
of the virus with "risks of maintaining the health system in the medium term" and Rt values regional mainly and significantly between 1.25 and 1.5.
The analysis of the trend of the epidemic curve indicates, however, that Italy is now very close to scenario 4. In this scenario, we read, "the regional Rt values are mainly and significantly higher than 1.5" and one scenario of this type "could quickly lead to a high number of cases and clear signs of overloading of assistance services, without the possibility of tracing the origin of the new cases".
Furthermore, "the growth in the number of cases could lead to an overload of care services within 1-1.5 months, unless the epidemic spreads predominantly among the younger age groups, as observed in the period July-August 2020. , and it was possible to protect the most fragile categories (eg the elderly) ".
In this regard, the document however points out that "it appears rather unlikely to be able to protect the most fragile categories in the presence of an epidemic characterized by these values of transmissibility".
In a national scenario of this type, the experts still note in the report, "it is presumable that many Regions / PAs are classified as high risk and, given the speed of diffusion and the interconnection between the various Regions / PAs, it is unlikely that there are situations of less than moderate risk ".
And again: "If the high risk situation were to persist for a period of more than three weeks, very aggressive containment measures are very likely necessary - warns the ISS".
