More than 40 percent of the courses have an NC

The number of courses with restricted admission is falling further: the Abi grade or another selection process is still relevant for 40 percent. However, the differences between the federal states are great.

For fewer and fewer people, the desired degree fails due to an admission restriction.

The number of courses that are only awarded on the basis of a certain Abitur grade or a selection process continues to decline.

This is evident from the annual statistics of the German Rectors' Conference.

Nationwide, in the winter semester of 20/21, only 40.8 percent of the so-called undergraduate courses were restricted in admission - i.e. those that lead to a first professional qualification such as a bachelor's degree or state examination.

Ten years ago that was more than 50 percent.

Compared to the previous year, the share has decreased by 1.5 percentage points.

Hard choice in the capital

When choosing a location, however, it can be more difficult for prospective students, because the differences between the federal states are large.

The proportion of undergraduate courses with restricted admission is particularly high in

  • Berlin (68.6 percent)

  • in Saarland (66.0 percent) and

  • in Hamburg (60.1 percent).

Most of the freely accessible courses are available in

  • Thuringia (86.7 percent without admission restrictions),

  • followed by Rhineland-Palatinate (74.3 percent),

  • Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (74 percent) and

  • Bavaria (73.9 percent).

Students who want to continue their education after completing their first degree have a little easier time.

The number of courses with restricted admission is 38.3 percent.

The statistics on the number of new students in the current winter semester are not yet available due to the corona.

Since the admission periods were usually longer than usual, the Federal Statistical Office will not publish the number of freshmen until December.
