During the journey, a horse in Rostock jumped out of its owner's car trailer and caused considerable hindrances in rush hour traffic in the morning.
As a police spokeswoman said, the animal had escaped south of the Schutower Kreuz on the motorway slip road to Autobahn 20.
The owner was only able to catch the frightened and injured horse with the help of animal rescue and the police, as the investigators said.
The mission lasted about an hour.
How the animal escaped is not yet known.
