The government will publish a decree on Saturday recording an upgrading of guards carried out during the week and at weekends.

This is a measure that will benefit the nearly 30,000 medical interns in the country, who also found themselves on the front line during the health crisis.

On Saturday, the government will publish a decree to revalue the amount of on-call work carried out during the week and on weekends by these postgraduate students, announced this Friday evening the Ministry of Health and Solidarity in Paris.

These upgrades were negotiated within the framework of the Ségur de la Santé.

“We are talking about thousands of students, who are between their seventh year and their twelfth year of study and who are already largely operational, justifies the minister's office.

They work in all hospital services, provide on-call duty alongside the regular practitioners and are today essential for the proper functioning of our health system ”.

An increase of 25%

Until now, medical interns received, for each night shift carried out during the week, a lump sum, the gross amount of which was 119 euros.

Those carried out during the week were evaluated at 130 euros.

As of November 1, these salaries will increase by around 25%.

On-call duty during the week will now be remunerated on the basis of a flat-rate amount of 149 euros gross, and 163 euros gross for on-call duty on weekends and on public holidays.

On average, says the ministry, a medical intern performs a weekend or public holiday call per month and four to five night shifts during the week per month.

The upgrading of night guards will therefore give them an automatic increase in remuneration.

During negotiations related to the Ségur de la Santé, the unions of medical interns demanded in particular better supervision of half-guards, these services carried out between 6 p.m. and midnight.

They demanded their better supervision and the respect of a safety rest.

On this point, the government announces a “recognition” of these shorter services.

"Convince young people to get involved"

Beyond the desire to better recognize the work of these young caregivers, who today suffer from a very large pay differential compared to students from other sectors, the Ministry of Health says it wants to "perpetuate" the branches of medicine.

“It is also about convincing young people to get involved in medical studies.

The dropping of pay after leaving school is a real issue.

"

In addition to these lump-sum remunerations, the government had already noted the increase in the basic remuneration of interns and junior doctors in medicine, pharmacy and dentistry.

A measure which will again enter into force on November 1, on the following basis:

  • 18,473 euros for an intern in the 1st year (+1769 euros / year, i.e. +147 euros / month);

  • 20,450 euros for an intern in the 2nd year (+1957 euros / year or +163 euros / month);

  • 27,042 euros for an intern in the 3rd year (+1389 euros / year or +116 euros / month);

  • 27,063 euros for an intern in the 4th year (+1410 euros / year or +117 euros / month);

  • 27,080 euros for an intern in the 5th year (+1427 euros / year or +119 euros / month).
