While the reconfinement has been in place for a few days, the French bow to the virus according to our barometer of the two crises

An overwhelming majority is ready to remain confined during Christmas and New Year's Eve, according to the Ifop barometer that we publish exclusively.

For Pierre Giacometti, co-founder of the No Com firm, “the fear of the virus is joining that of losing one's job”.

Did the French realize the gravity of the situation?

PIERRE GIACOMETTI.

This is indeed the great novelty.

With this second wave of contaminations that we have been witnessing for several weeks, the French have now perfectly integrated the fact that we were going through a serious and long health crisis.

They made a point.

This is a big change from last spring when the prevailing feeling was that it was more of a winter epidemic.

Fear vis-à-vis the epidemic is now reaching unprecedented levels, certainly the economic crisis: 48% fear it, they were only 42% last May.

And, paradoxically, it is among the inhabitants of rural municipalities that the virus is most feared: 62% of their inhabitants are afraid of it against only 55% of those who reside in Ile-de-France.

Do all generations react the same way?

There is a form of cleavage between young people and seniors that is being established and that too is new compared to what we observed in the spring.

Older people are much more concerned about health risks than young people, who think above all about their professional future and fear dropping out of the job market or not being able to enter it.

We have spoken of a "sacrificed generation", this feeling is indeed emerging on the side of the youth.

Like everyone else, she understood that the epidemic would be long, even if nearly one in two young people is afraid of being infected.

Until when are the French ready to stay confined?

More than seven out of 10 French people (71%) accept it on a long-term basis, including during the end of the year celebrations and whatever the social level.

But there are pockets of resistance.

Among those under 25, the possibility of its extension during the end of year celebrations is more difficult: 39% do not want to hear about it.

In the Paris region, this rate reaches 35% and among traders, it is 36% and 37% among popular categories.

Do they keep all their confidence in the hospital, the doctors?

Overall, it remains very solid, just as the French do not seem so angry with pharmaceutical companies, despite the "Sanofi affair" which initially wanted to ensure the first of its current vaccine, to the States. -United.

On the other hand, doubt is settling on the side of scientific experts.

The episode of hydroxychloroquine and Professor Raoult apparently caused trouble and this is particularly visible among right-wing voters.

As for the government, accused at the start of the epidemic of lying on the question of masks, of disorganization, of lack of responsiveness, its action is judged a little less harshly than six months ago.
