It is true that there is no need for unnecessary intimidation during pregnancy but two new studies published this week by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have found that pregnant women infected with the corona virus are more likely to become seriously ill and die from Covid-19 and are at increased risk for preterm birth.

Although the overall risk of serious illness or death remains low, the researchers found that pregnant women in Corona were more likely to need intensive care, a respirator and oxygen support than non-pregnant women who carry the virus.

The first study found that the rate of preterm births (birth before week 37) stands at 12.9 percent among pregnant women who have had corona, compared with 10.2 percent among the general population.

"The new study adds to the growing evidence that pregnant women are at increased risk for coronary heart disease," Dr. Dennis Jameson, chair of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics at Emory University of Georgia, told CNN. Proves that their babies are at risk, even if the babies are not infected, they may be affected. "

In the second report, the researchers examined data on 461,825 women aged 15 to 44 who were found to be positive for Covid-19 between January 22 and October.

They focused only on those who experienced Corona symptoms.

The team found that pregnant women were at higher risk of needing intensive care, with 10.5 per thousand pregnant women being hospitalized in intensive care, compared with 3.9 per thousand non-pregnant women.

In addition, pregnant women were three times more likely to need help breathing with an invasive ventilator than non-pregnant women.

Similarly, they were at higher risk of needing oxygen support to improve lung and heart function.

They were also at higher risk of dying, with 1.5 deaths per thousand pregnant women, compared with 1.2 per thousand non-pregnant women.

The team noted that no matter if they were pregnant, women over the age of 35 were at higher risk of developing a serious illness.

The researchers said the greater likelihood of serious illness in pregnant women may be due to physiological changes in pregnancy, including increased heart rate and decreased lung function.

"To reduce the risk of serious illness and death from covid-19, pregnant women should be advised about the importance of seeking prompt medical attention if they have symptoms, and the presence of SARS-CoV-2 infection should be strongly emphasized to them and their families During all the medical sessions, including the postpartum visits, "the staff wrote.

Risk of preterm birth and infancy

Researchers at the CDC also found that pregnant women who fell ill in Corona tended to give birth earlier.

The research team found that among 3,912 births, 12.9 percent were preterm.

By comparison, preterm births account for 10.2 percent of live births among the general U.S. population in 2019. Babies born prematurely are at increased risk for death and disability, including breathing, vision and hearing problems.

Among infants tested for covid-19, 2.6 percent were positive.

Corona virus infection was most common in infants whose mothers were found to be positive within a week of birth.

It was also found that 60.6 percent of the women experienced symptoms, although the researchers claim that their symptoms did not affect the frequency of preterm birth in infants.

One basic medical condition was reported in 45 percent of women - obesity.

Because 84.4 percent of the women in the report experienced Covid-19 in their third trimester, further research is needed to understand the effect of infection in early pregnancy and the long-term effects on infants.

While severe Covid-19 appears in infants, most of the infected infants were asymptomatic or with mild illness, the researchers noted.

Jamieson advises pregnant women to avoid meetings, wear masks and keep a social distance - even inside their homes, if possible.

In addition, she stressed that the flu vaccine of the year will be more important than ever, especially for pregnant women.
